Preparation stage: Rice is prepared with herbs and milk according to the patient’s strength (Rogi bala) and severity of the disease (Roga Bala).
MAIN PROCEDURE (PRADHANA KARMA)
This involves massage (Abhyanga) with ayurvedic oil followed with Shastika Shali Sweda, where the bolus is dipped in herbal milk and sudation is provided.
POST PROCEDURE (PASHCHYAT KARMA)
After the treatment the individual is advised to take rest for a while. It is beneficial to keep the person hydrated with Vata, Pitta or Kapha tea if available.
The healing activity of Shastika Shali Pinda Sweda or Navara Kizhi is because of the medicinal activity of herbs, rice and milk, which are used in the treatment.
When the treatment starts it increases the temperature of the body. Vasodilatation occurs throughout the body due to increased temperature and medicinal activity of the herbs and rice. As a result of vasodilation, enriched blood flow occurs to the skin bringing essential oxygen and nutrients and removing toxins.
Whole process including the herbs, rice and milk acts as a muscular relaxant, decreases any discomfort, inflammation and stiffness.
