  Panchakarma Detox Program

What is Panchakarma?

To remove ama (toxins) from the system, Ayurveda employs many internal bio-cleansing programs. One of these, most widely known to world, is a five-procedure program known as panchakarma (“five actions”) treatment.

Panchakarma is the Sanskrit term for detox or purification and translates as the five (pancha) actions (karma) necessary to cleanse the body from accumulated waste material. These waste materials could be any thing from fat, fatty acids, carbs, glucose, cholesterol or inflammatory markers.

Ayurveda, an ancient Indian system of medicine, which has been in practice by Ayurvedic practitioners for thousands of years for the purpose of both enhancing health and well-being and rectifying long-standing, chronic diseases.

Ayurvedic Doctors may prescribe the use of various herbs and medicines during and after the Panchakarma treatment to ensure its effectiveness. But there is no one set rule for two individuals about Panchakarma detox plan. One’s panchakarma detox plans, herbs and ayurvedic oils, might look completely different from another, based on their body strength, doshas and spread of disease etc.

Panchakarma believed to rejuvenate and revitalise the mind and body and systematically strengthens and balances all the bodie's major tissues and organs functions.

Through a series of therapeutic procedures planed by Ayurvedic Practitioners, panchakarma is tailored to the client’s individual constitution (prakriti) or imbalance doshas. Only an accurate planed Panchakarma treatment systematically helps to release, melt, loosen, mobilise and eliminate toxins and impurities from all the bodily issues.

Once tissues have been cleansed and digestive fire has been strengthened, Ayurveda doctor will recommend the food and herbs, which would be then capable of being effectively metabolised by the body. Improvement in health is then possible and constant.

What are the steps of Panchakarma?

For a Panchakarma detox to be totally successful one must first rest the mind and the digestive system, as these are our two most energy-demanding activities. This allows one to maximize the amount of potential energy available for cleansing, re-balancing and strengthening the body.

The next step is to gently move waste products and toxins (ama) from where they are lodged in the deeper structures of the body and to eliminate them either through the nose and mouth (through nasya & vamana therapy), the gastro-intestinal tract (through enema or basti therapy) or through the pores of the skin (through heating or sweating therapy - svedana).

Nasaya Panchakarma MelbourneFinally, then one needs to nourish and strengthen the body with natural herbs and Indian Medicines. To safely and comfortably flush toxins and impurities from the body requires several important stages.

What Panchakarma involves?

Lets understand how a qualified ayurvedic practitioner performs full-fleshed panchkarma detox.

The panchakarma programs used at Ayurvedic treatment canters include pre-purification methods to prepare the body to let go of the toxins, followed by the purification methods themselves.

The first preparatory step is called Internal Oleation. The client is asked to drink a specific, small quantity of ghee (medicated clarified butter) every day, instead of breakfast, for 5 to 7 days. The ghee creates a thin film in the body’s channels that lubricates them, allowing the lodged ama (toxins) in the deep connective tissues to move freely, without sticking to the channels, into the gastrointestinal tract for elimination. Internal oleation is done for five days or even longer, depending on the individual circumstances.

This is followed by External Oleation in the form of oil massage (snehana) and sweating (swedana). Oil is applied to the entire body with a particular kind of massage that helps the toxins move toward the gastrointestinal tract.

Ayurvedic massage also softens both the superficial and deep tissues, helping to relieve stress and to nourish the nervous system. Then the individual is given a herbal steam bath, which further loosens the toxins and increases their movement toward the gastrointestinal tract.

Ayurveda Treatment After complete internal and external oleation thearpies, it is considered that the aggravated doshas are well “ripened” and are ready to be removed.

At this point the Ayurveda practitioner gives purgation or laxative therapy (virechana) to remove aggravated doshas and accumulated ama from the small intestines and colon.

So far, only the removal of toxins and cleansing of the body is done. But after this, in the last stage of panchakarma treatment, rejuvenation therapy is started. This rejuvenation therapy will help to remodulate the body lymphatic system or immunity, will re-educate the cells or reboot the cells functions or body doshas.

Can I do Panchakarma at home?

Panchakarma is a special, powerful treatment or procedure, requiring guidance from a properly qualified and trained Ayurvedic Practitioner or doctor, not just someone with a modest amount of Ayurvedic training. It is performed and planned individually for each person, with his or her specific constitution and medical condition in mind and it requires close observation, guidance and supervision at every stage, including post-panchakarma support.

So one should never plan its own panchakarma treatment. Only ayurvedic doctor should plan this. Out of whole panchakarma treatments, few things can be done at home. Only following steps or stages of panchakarma treatment can be done at home, but still your ayurvedic doctor should supervise everything.

First stage of panchakarma treatment (internal oleation- taking medicated ghee)- can be taken from home.

Second stage of panchakarma treatment (external oleation- getting specific ayurvedic thearpies)- needs to be done in the ayurvedic clinic only.

Third stage of Panchakarma treatment (medicated purgation)- can be done from home (under the strict supervision of Ayurveda doctor).

Forth stage of Panchakarma detox- rejuvenation stage, where kitchardi is required to eaten, 3 times a day; can be done from home.

Does Panchakarma have side effects?

This Ayurveda Panchakarma detox is not for everyone. If you are looking for an aggressive way to treat your health that may show quick results but alongside might bring some damaging side effects in return, then Ayurveda or panchakarma is not your treatment of choice.

Ayurveda is extremely effective line of natural treatment, but it may work slowly in different individuals, as the process of ayurveda treatment involves the Ayurvedic doctor to understand and diagnose the root cause of the disease and eradicating the cause completely by cleansing the body and offering various Ayurvedic Medicines. Panchakarma is a part of the Ayurvedic Treatment that offers the cleansing via ayurveda detox program.

Even though panchakarma detox can get fast results but it’s not the quick start type. The person needs to be physically as well as mentally prepared to consider Panchakarma detox.

What Is panchakarma Every day, constantly we are exposed to an unbelievably polluted environment choked with millions of toxins. Everything we eat, the air we breathe, the things we touch, have a certain amount of pollutants in them.  This is the primary reason as to why people all around the world are becoming weaker day by day instead of getting healthier.

Ayurveda the traditional Indian Medicine science brings us the vast information on our daily diet and lifestyle choices that can help us enhance our immunity and fight with these pollutants effectively.

The immune system of a human body has self-inherent detoxification ability, which can kill the toxins. But because a large number of pollutants get absorbed in our bodies, the healing system breaks down causing severe illnesses in the long run.

Thus, it becomes essential to adopt an effective body detox plan to prevent the accumulation of harmful toxins in our body systems. If you are looking at cleansing and detoxing your body and want to try Ayurveda the traditional Indian Medicines science, then Panchakarma Detox might be your choice of detox!

If not planned properly or if its instructions are not followed properly, then panchakarma can also causes different sort side effects. Side effects could vary from like, more number of loose motions than expectation, headaches and feeling cloudy in head, during the stage one etc.

When and how can I detox my body from Ayurveda Panchakarma treatment?

When you feel sluggish? Are struggling with skin related problem, chronic pain or digestive or stress related issues?  Not able to concentrate effectively, feeling tired, restless and unhealthy all the time, then it may be time for body Panchakarma treatment detoxification.

Ayurvedic texts suggest that everyone should get panchakarma detoxification at least once or twice a year. Ayurvedic Practitioners may suggest Panchkarma detox at the change of the season to maintain the health of a healthy person or to specifically suggest Panchakarma detox as a part of an Ayurvedic Treatment plan and wanting to offer Ayurvedic Medicine to a clean body to enhance the effectiveness of these Indian herbs and medicines.

Panchakarma Detox in Ayurvedic way is preventative for those who are healthy and need to maintain and improve their cellular function and curative for those who are experiencing any disease or disorder. It plays a key role in cleansing the body of toxins, which are accumulated everyday.

Panchakarma detox opens up the body’s energy paths, stimulates the circulation of body fluids, regulates the digestive systems, activates the lymphatic system, improves skin and body tone, strengthens muscles, bones, and blood vessels, and revitalize body’s self-healing mechanisms.

What can I expect from Panchakarma?

The key to remaining healthy is awareness of self. If you know your Ayurvedic Body constitution or Prakriti, then you can remain alert to how your mind, body and emotions respond to the changing conditions in your environment and the numerous facets of your daily life, such as the food you eat, you can make informed choices to maintain good health.

The ayurvedic principle is simply that eating the right kinds of food for your prakruti maintains vitality and balance, while eating the wrong kinds creates imbalance in the doshas.

When the doshas are aggravated because of frequent poor diet, unhealthy lifestyle, negative emotions, or other factors, they first affect Agni (the body’s biological fire or metabolism which governs digestion and assimilation).

When Agni becomes weakened or disturbed, food is not properly digested. The undigested, unabsorbed food particles accumulate in the gastrointestinal tract and turn into the toxic, sticky substance called Ama. This ama clogs the intestines, overflows through other bodily channels such as the blood vessels, and infiltrates the bodily tissues, causing disease.

Ama is thus considered the root causes of disease in ayurveda. It is refered as toxin in lay man's language. The presence of ama in the system can be felt as fatigue, or a feeling of physical or emotional heaviness. It may induce constipation, indigestion, gas and diarrhea; or it may generate bad breath, a bad taste in the mouth, stiffness in the body, or mental confusion. Ama can most easily be detected as a thick coating on the tongue.

So after getting a proper and planned panchakarma treatment, one can expect the above-mentioned symptoms of ama removal from the body. Also one feels relax, calm, composed, grounded and organised. Five senses get sharper and alert.

Should I use Ghee for Panchakarma?

The use of ghee for internal oleation is recommended for most people in Ayurveda Panchakarma detox program. This ghee may be infused with Ayurveda medicinal herbs or could be plaine ghee, clarified butter. However, individuals with high and uncontrolled blood levels of cholesterol, triglycerides and sugar might not use it (based on your ayurvedic doctor suggestion). Even if you are suitable to take ghee but you don't want to take it because of some dietary choices or you are vegan, you can discuss other options with your Ayurvedic doctor as alternatives like flax seed oil can be chosen if Ayurveda doshas allows to do so.
